This is "The Black Church" or "Biserica Neagra".It is one of the most important landmarks in my city, Brasov, Romania, and it is one of the largest Gothic churches in Europe. It's name comes from the great fire in 1689 set by Hapsburg invaders that burned our entire city.
This is "Catherine's Gate" or "Poarta Ecaterina". It is technically Brasov's last standing medieval structure without alterations or renovations. It was built by Saxon settlers in 1559 for defensive purposes. At one point it was the only entrance to the city that was surrounded by walls. This gate provides insight into Romania’s complex history and today serves as an important symbol of the city. The four turrets simbolize that the city had judicial autonomy.
